Editing the Commercial

Today in class we started editing our commercials. Instead of using studios on the school laptop we used iMovie on a Mac. We imported the footage we filmed on to the computer. We selected the tracks, track one for film, track 2 for audio. As well as titles above the tracks. The footage in total was about 37 seconds. After cutting, it got down to about 25 seconds. Most of the clips were six seconds each and didn't have much room for cuts. Since we filmed on average four takes per clip. We were not worried about having the right amount of clips.
For editing, we not only cut clips. We added transitions between scenes. Some transitions are fading, cross blur, and leaving room for jump cuts. We used jumpcuts, when our over the shoulder shots were going back and forth.  This created the same effect of two people talking in a casual setting. The transitions were added, following the whole group approving them. The transitions flow between scenes, causing it to still make sense. Something we also added was text above the film. I added the text saying "America runs on Dunkin."Along with that an ending credit of all of the student actors was included.
Not only was text and transitions added, but so was sound. In the end, we added a basic iMovie symbol clashing sound. When this sound was added it showed that I can edit using all three tracks at the same time. There is only one sound effect because Dunkin doesnt have a set "song." Some of the reasons we used a Mac with iMovie is due to the school computers. At first, the computer would accept the new folder we created with our footage. Having messages pop up that the files were too big. This was only a minor issue due to that we knew other resources were available. With minor setbacks, the process was simple and not too bad. The editing was fun and enjoyable.

Filming the Commercial

Today in class we had time to go out on campus and film. For our Dunkin commercial, we used props like the food bags as well as a coffee cup. We stuck to casual clothing with minimal makeup. The location we ended up using was the entry to the school on our senior patio. We used our storyboard as a guide on what we were filming. We had to meet certain criteria as well on what to film. That includes how many shots and what kind of angles to use. As a group, we gave tasks like acting, filming, and directing. My role was to be an actor, to promote Dunkin. The project was timed for 25-30 seconds, in total we filmed for about an hour.
After we scouted out our location and set up props it was time to film. We filmed in order of appearance. Collectively decided to go off of our story board a bit because better ideas came with the situation. Instead of handing over dunkin we decided for two characters, to start a conversation over the fact they both have Dunkin. The scene is seen by one person casually walking to later realize a classmate had it as well. The two start talking about their orders and how good they are. Our shots include pans, mediums close ups, two shots as well as over the shoulder. These shots and angles show significance of a conversation. The angles were not extreme going along with the casual feel to the commercial. Typically we spent maybe one to two minutes filming each scene.
All of the shots flowed well. We kept track of where we were in the previous clip. With editing transitions will be smooth because of the surroundings. All of the clips were usually about five to six seconds. Each clip usually required about four to five takes so we got the correct shot. Having different clips to chose from will make editing way easier. The filming process wasn’t stressful and easy. After filming we went back to dump on the computer. We chose to film on my phone camera and connected it to the computer. The filming process was easy and I enjoyed it.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today in class we learned how to edit footage on Pinnacle Studios, and vocabulary. Some vocabulary terms that are useful is dump, import, and export. First off we were taught on how to sign out , set up cameras on tripods and how the features of the tripod. Also how to properly use the SD card and use the reader into the computer. We then proceeded to watch an example, take notes on how to edit using the software. I learned how to dump all of your footage onto your computer as well as export it into the editing software. Once all of the footage is dumped into the computer from the SD card you no longer need it, and can start the editing process. If your footage isn’t dumped properly you can lose the footage. When dumping you can make specific folders for what project you’re working on. The more specific the more organized you’ll be.
Editing adds a lot to any project. It makes the scene work with the plot, it adds effect to emphasize acting. Editing takes place while the filming is going on or is completely done after all the takes are complete. In class we learned the basics of using Pinnacle Editing Software. For example how to import footage, cut and undo takes. One key thing for editing is to make sure the footage is on the correct track. Any title that you want to add goes into track one. Any raw footage and take goes on track two. The sounds like effects, voice overs, and music all go on track three. All three tacks can go at the same time to fulfill the final outcome of the project.
The process of editing continues as you’ll need to check your project. After effects are added, shots are chosen you’re going to have to make sure the work is exported. The exported project should be final and what you want to show to your peers. Transitions is a great technique to add to scenes. You can add full screen transitions or make little jump cuts. Adding effects to the video it’s self like broken glass adds to what the plot could be of the film or can look pretty. Editing allows the project to be clean and unique. It calls for creativity and works the ability to think outside the box to make your project stand out. Editing techniques are useful in everyday life and can be applied to generic skills. The editing as a whole really takes effect , and creativity to really add to your project

Planning Blog for Dunkin Donuts Commercial

We will be making a Dunkin Donuts commercial. In order to plan for this commercial, we will be explaining the different aspects of the film shoot. The purpose of planning is to get all of our thoughts out and have detail. With detail it will make the actual filming easier, because with an outline, we already know in advance what we need for our commercial. Having more detail in our plan is better due to the fact that our filming can be done more efficiently. Story boarding is also effective because its a vision on what the actors will being preforming. Both methods of an outline and story boarding are effective because a lot of detail goes into the plans.

  • Props: out props will include a Dunkin Donuts coffee, and a Dunkin Donuts doughnut box. This is product placement and our subject.
  • Costumes: Casual clothing that's school appropriate. To represent the everyday student getting Dunkin.
  • Schedule: 10/10 planning blog, 10/14 Story board, 10/17 story boarding approval, 10/22 filming on campus, 10/24 editing, 10/28 submission.
  • Location List: Senior patio, Main hallway walking in casually with product
  • Back up plan: Alternate location is main media stairs or covered hallway. This location is still effective because the message can get across and shows common student area. If a member is absent another group member will take the role.

Research, Conventions, and Codes

Our group decided to choose Dunkin Donuts for our commercial. Commercials for Dunkin Donuts usually include conventions related to promotions, and how caffeine affects the body. Mostly broadcasted on television and YouTube, Dunkin appeals to the general audience. Common camera angles, shots, and props are standard. Editing for the commercials include shot/ reverse shot, reaction shot, split screen as well as jump cut.
Common camera shots are establishing shots to show the standard Dunkin location. Long shots are also used to show an individual with the product or using the product to promote the brand. Two shots usually show the consumer along with an employee delivering the product.Wide shots can show the promoted product with a blurred background to give a nice look. Common movements include pan to show movement in the store. Angles for examples would be high angle , or eye level for generic views.
Some sounds are dialogue to show interaction between actors, and ambient sound such as the Dunkin "theme song," which is instrumental. Common sound effects would be a "wow" but nothing more than common noise. Props would include the product, and the environment like the store tables, coffee mugs, along with the work station. Makeup is natural, and costumes are regular clothing with the Dunkin employee uniform. Lighting would represent common outside lighting and it's all even nothing harsh. Dunkin commercials are supposed to represent an average Dunkin experience or show everyday interactions.

Introductory

My name is Kelsey, Some classes I take are AICE Media, AICE Global, Comm Tech Honers, as well as Spanish. I have interest in these classes because they all cover different topics. In AICE media we focus on films and TV shows. I like this class most because I like things that deal with photography and just the environment of producing shows. I particularity like AICE global because I can look at issues from different sides and open my eyes on whats happening in the world and chances we're taking to resolve it. I choose to take comm tech to enhance my computer using skills since that's pretty much the future. Things we do in that class is Adobe Photoshop and editing so I think having those skills will come in handy in the future.
Some of the interest I have include sports, traveling, as well as business. I play volleyball and have been for the past 6 years and have enjoyed it since day one. I also like watching college sports and rooting for my favorite team, really enjoy the excitement of who's going to win. I really enjoy traveling, in the past year I've gone to New York State , Newfoundland,Canada and previously gone to the Bahamas and visited 35 of the 50 states. Traveling is really enjoyable to me because I can see different cultures and environments. Along with business that's what I want to major in during college. I like knowing the marketing side and how things are sold.
Disinterests of mine are very little I pretty much enjoy a lot of things. Some would say I'm open minded and down to try anything. Although I'm a picky eater and don't like the woods that much. I even enjoy school for the information and organization, and being with my friends to become successful.
